Hi! We are looking at taking in my friend’s 8 month old Labranard. She looks more like the black lab side than the St. Bernard. I am trying to find any information that will help us make this decision. We would be new to dog ownership so we don’t want to jump in too quickly. I am just looking for any information of what to expect. She says that Spice is kennel/room trained (she stays in their laundry room during the day but will kennel too), she is house trained and has a very easy temperament. Is there anything we should be on the look out for when we meet her? Does anyone have experience with bringing a dog to a new home and if so is there a big chance of her relapsing or regressing in her house training? I’m not sure what other things I should even ask so any info would be helpful!

Hi! One big thing to keep in mind is just how large the dog can get. Any dog with St Bernard in it will likely be over 100 lbs when full grown and quite possibly more. They can also be tall – our female is able to take items off of the edge of the kitchen table while standing on all fours.

Big dogs eat a lot of food also. You’re probably looking at a 40lbs bag of food a month which means somewhere around $50/mon for a decent variety. on the topic of costs – vet bills for the yearly checkup and heartworm/tick/flea/etc. meds will probably run $300-$400 a year.

If the dog is already housebroken then you may have a lapse but that shouldn’t last too long if you make sure you take the time to show it where it needs to go to get outside. It will take a while for the dog to adjust to it’s new “pack” also. Probably a good idea to get enrolled in an obedience course, not necessarily for the dog but more for the new owner. ;) You will need to “assert” your position before the dog can try to take the Alpha role. Some simple obedience training can help you with that.

If you have kids or other animals, make sure they don’t crowd the new dog. You’ll want the dog to have the time to get adjusted to it’s new surroundings.

    Thanks for dropping by!
